Tom & Meredith Brokaw Visit

The Greatest Generation at Saint Simeon’s

Saint Simeon’s Episcopal Home was honored to have Tom and Meredith Brokaw as special guests for two events on Wednesday, May 13th.

Tom Brokaw, television journalist and author, is perhaps best known as the former anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News.  He is the author of the book The Greatest Generation, which is a term he coined to describe the generation of Americans who grew up during the deprivation of the Great Depression, and then went on to fight in World War II.  They fought not for the fame and recognition, but because it was the right thing to do.

Meredith Brokaw is the niece of the late James Harvey, who was a member of the Saint Simeon’s Board of Trustees, a Trustee Emeritus, a generous donor to the Home, an avid supporter of Our Next Chapter:  Building with Love! and a beloved Resident of the Home.  Mr. Harvey’s wife, Inadoll, as well as his mother and Meredith’s grandmother, Edythe Harvey, were also Residents at Saint Simeon’s.  Meredith is the author of Big Sky Cooking, a personal story of her family’s Montana experience told through delicious recipes and menus, charming reflections, and photographs.

In the afternoon the Brokaws joined Residents, Saint Simeon’s Board members and the Saint Simeon’s Auxiliary leadership for “The Greatest Generation at Saint Simeon’s:  The Assisted Living and Wellness Centers Preview and Reception.”  This was an opportunity for Residents to enjoy a sneak preview of their soon to be new apartments, the Living Room, Bistro, Carla’s Corner and the Wellness Center.  Tom Brokaw shared stories with the Residents about visiting Tulsa and being a part of the Harvey family.  He spoke about the principles of the Greatest Generation and noted that Saint Simeon’s project being built debt-free is a return to “core American principles.”

Residents Judge Tom Crewson, a U.S. Army veteran, and Marie Millar, presented a special gift of appreciation to the Brokaws from all the Saint Simeon’s Residents.  Among the items included in the gift basket were Resident Dr. Ben Henneke’s books of essays, Writing with a Quill Pen and Typescript; the Auxiliary Cookbook, Saint Simeon’s Savory Sensations; as well as a jewelry pouch and coin purse handmade by Residents in the “Stitch in Time” group.

In the evening the Brokaws were the special guests at the Donor Recognition Dinner at Southern Hills Country Club, hosted by Phyllis and George Dotson.  The Dotsons, who served as Co-Chairs of the Capital Campaign, honored the more than 200 donors of the successful $22.1 million Our Next Chapter:  Building with Love! capital campaign.
