The third annual “Stars Among Us: A Celebration of Age” was held on Thursday, May 9th. Saint Simeon’s honored residents for their contributions to both the Saint Simeon’s and Tulsa communities. The residents recognized were Ruth Anderson, Eugene Anderson, Ruth Boone, Dr. Reece Boone, Jaunita Davis, Dr. John Major, Edith Wilcox, and Frances Lewis. Each received a typed version of an interview based on their own life experiences, a certificate of achievement, and a book by various authors on mature adult issues.

Marian Matthews, Executive Director of Saint Simeon’s, notes, “The active lives of the eight honorees serve as positive examples for all of us. They remind us that irrespective of what stage of life we are in, our community is best served when we demonstrate kindness to our neighbors, continue to learn and explore new ideas and technologies, and exercise our minds and bodies regularly.”

Karen Keith, KJRH, Channel 2 served as the keynote speaker and provided a walk down memory lane by recalling many historical events that have had an impact on all our lives. John Barker, President of the Saint Simeon’s Foundation also thanked the “Stars” for their actions and noted that we are honored each chose to be a member of the Saint Simeon’s family.

Resident and Star Alumnus Ruth Staudt played several festive numbers on the piano and accompanied vocalist Chris Smith, Life Enrichment Director, on a song of tribute to each of the Stars. Chris wrote special lyrics to the tune of “Would You Like to Swing on a Star”. The combined talents of Ruth and Chris brought the house down. We wanted to share Chris’s special lyrics so here they are:

Stars Among Us 2002: Tribute by Chris Smith—(To the tune of "Would you like to swing on a star?")

Every one of you is a star

In your lives you all have come far

Your performance is way above par

That's why we gathered here today!

Ruth and Gene Anderson moved out in '01

They've made a difference since then

They keep the chapel tidy and our plants all are trimmed

They check on other folks and they look after their kin!

They've always got a kind word and a special grin.

We're glad to have them at St. Sim!                                          Star Honorees with John Barker,

Ruth and Gene you each are a star!                                         Foundation President

And we want to say that we are...

So thrilled that you moved out this far

We're happy that you came today!
