Franchon worked eight years for Volunteers of America. She was a Residential Supervisor for clients who were developmentally disabled. She did everything from planning their schedules and menus to arranging for their doctor appointments and attended team meetings with other staff member. Her clients were people who had formerly been living at Hissom, a state facility, that was closed and the residents went to live in various communities in supervised homes. Some of them had been in car accidents, or sports related accidents, or suffered from seizures and their families were unable to take care of them. Some of the people were semi-independent and could go to work but needed help taking care of money matters.

As a Residential Supervisor she was on call seven days a week but she wanted to work five days a week so she decided to look for another job. When she saw an ad for St. Simeon's in the newspaper she remembered a friend of hers when she first moved back to Tulsa was working here in the Housekeeping Department and had spoken highly of it so she came out and applied and the rest, as they say, is history.

Franchon lives in the Owen Park neighborhood, just west of downtown Tulsa. Owen Park was Tulsa's very first park and the neighborhood is made up of older homes (she's in the process of restoring hers) with lots of trees and very nice neighbors. In her spare time Franchon likes to read everything, do crossword puzzles, and is a member of the Daughters of Isis and the Golden Circle, both affiliated with Eastern Star (her dad was a Shriner). As a member she helps with their service projects in the community like the school supply drive for Anderson and Bunch Elementary Schools. She is also a member of Antioch Baptist Church, which recently moved into its new building off of 56th street north.

She has a boy friend and in the next year or so will be seriously thinking about starting a family. She knows two children will be her limit and she wants them before she turns 50. As far as pets, she adopted one of the cockatiels from St. Simeon's, remember Pretty Boy? Now she has added a female named, what else, Pretty Girl, and they are very happy, not nearly as noisy as the cockatiels were here. They have four different whistles and particularly love being outside in their cage listening to the other birds. In a few months she plans on replacing with a poodle her cocker of many years who died recently.

Franchon loves to travel. She takes monthly rides to Caney, Kansas (just over the state line), to play the lottery. She thinks that Oklahoma should have its own lottery -- that since people will play no matter where, they might as well be spending their money here and it would benefit the schools.

Franchon is interested in a career in nursing and recently with the help of St. Simeon's got her Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certification. Now she is enrolled in classes at Oklahoma State University preparing her to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Her goal is to finish school and someday work here as an LPN. St. Simeon's is blessed to have Franchon as part of our family and it looks like we can look forward to many more wonderful years of her service. Just think, we all will be able to say we knew her before she became Nurse Franchon.

SPEAK UP!

Marian Matthews, Executive Director of Saint Simeon's, is in the process of implementing the new "Speak UP" program, sponsored by Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Association's.

Details of this exciting new program will be provided in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Marian asks that residents and family members advise staff of personal healthcare concerns and safety concerns, including items in need of repair in the apartments or the common living areas. Your input will help us be more effective.
