reading problem, always has, as does one of her brothers. Back then the school would just keep passing you on from grade to grade even if you couldn't read and that's what happened with them until Denise had to quit school in the ninth grade.

A reading specialist who came here and worked with Denise taught her to slow down, take as much time as she needed and how to use special tricks to break down the syllables to sound them out. Denise says that experience has taught her that there are different ways of learning. Her life proves that. Also, don't ever give up. There are ways you can learn to overcome almost any problem. What a courageous woman Denise is and what a fine example she is for all of us.

President's Day

February 17th

The following was published in "The Wind", a newsletter published in Vinalhaven, Maine. Thank you Ellen Henneke for submitting this interesting comparison of the lives and assassinations of President Lincoln and President Kennedy.

  • Both Lincoln and Kennedy were concerned with Civil Rights.  Lincoln was elected President in 1860; Kennedy in 1960.

  • Both were slain on a Friday in the presence of their wives.

  • Their successors were southern Democrats and both were in the Senate.

  • Andrew Johnson was born in 1808 and Lyndon Johnson was born in 1908.

  • John Wilkes Booth was born in 1839 and Lee Harvey Oswald was born in 1939.

  • Booth and Oswald were southerners favoring unpopular ideas.

  • Both President's wives lost children through death while in the White House.

  • Lincoln's secretary, whose name was Kennedy, advised him not to go to the theatre.  Kennedy's secretary, whose name was Lincoln, advised him not to go to Dallas.

  • John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in a theatre and ran to a warehouse.  Lee Harvey Oswald shot Kennedy from a warehouse and ran to a theatre.

  • Both assassins were killed before being brought to trial.

Oral Hygiene Care Tips

(The following oral hygiene tip for mature adults was found at the American Dental Association website: www.ada.org)

At my age, why should I bother with oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing?

Thorough daily brushing and flossing of your natural teeth are essential to keep them in good condition -- especially as you age. Plaque, the sticky, colorless layer of bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease (periodontal disease), can build up quickly on the teeth of older adults, particularly when they neglect oral hygiene. This can increase your risk for tooth decay and periodontal disease

A few simple steps can help you maintain good oral health throughout your life. Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental cleaners. Choose products that carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance, your assurance that the products have met the ADA's standards for safety and effectiveness. Be sure to see your dentist regularly for exams and professional teeth cleaning.

Together Through The Bad Times

An elderly man on his deathbed was talking to his beloved wife of many years. She tenderly held his hand, telling him she loved him. The man said , "You have been by my side through many bad times. Remember when I lost my job? You were there. When I had my accident? You nursed me back to health. And when the recession hit and we lost everything, you stated by my side. And now I am at death's door. I just realized something. .... You're bad luck!"

(Thank you Sallie Engelson for submitting this joke.)
