The snowstorm that ushered in the last week of February should remind us all to count our blessings!

Here at St. Simeon's not one of us went untended, unfed, cold or forgotten.

Thank you to every single employee who made that possible.

Maybe we should circulate a letter of thanks and commendation to the care-givers, snow shovelers, cooks and servers and Paula (whose care for the cottage dwellers was so specific).

Any volunteers to write such a letter?

At any rate, remember them when you say your prayers of thanksgiving.

Give thanks, too, for the tractor and snowplow!

State Powell shares this true story with us.

A physician in Texas, who had been a Navy flier in World War II, shared it with her:

“My father put his arm around my shoulders and said, 'Son, I'm glad you're going to college. But if it gets too much for you, you can just come home'.

This surprised me because my father had always stressed the importance of education. The he continued, 'yes, sir, if you can't make it, just come home.

You come home and we'll give you forty acres and a mule,'

State says the doctor always paused here and then said:

“That's what he said: 'Forty acres and a mule'.

“Many a day and night I wanted to just throw the books through the window and go home. But the thought of that forty acres and a mule plus the hot South Carolina sun was always enough to stop me.”

Thank you, State. That's a keeper.

Have you ever been to a Saturday night bean super in a little New England Church? The beans, the coleslaw, the salads, the pies, the cakes, the tables to be served and the dishes to be washed make a long, full day's work that generally falls on a “faithful few”.

One of them once said, “When we have a bean supper we're so tuckered out that we can only manage scrambled eggs Sunday morning!”

Sallie Engelson submitted the following to enjoy: 'An archeologist is the best husband a woman can have; the older she gets, the more interested he is in her.'

“Joan was about to make her first parachute jump. The instructor said, “First you pull the big cord. If it doesn't work, pull the little cord. A red pickup truck will be waiting for you when you land.”

Joan jumped. She pulled the big cord, but nothing happened. She pulled the little cord. Still nothing.

“That's just great,” she muttered. “Now I suppose the red pickup truck won't be there, either.”
