Writing With A Quill Pen

In 1995, Ben G. Henneke, PhD, , a resident of Saint Simeon’s Episcopal Home and a former President of The University of Tulsa, began sharing his insightful and many times humorous observations about life in the “Quill of the Hill,” a monthly newsletter printed for the residents, families and friends of Saint Simeon’s Episcopal Home.

Dr. Henneke and his late wife, Ellen, moved to Saint Simeon’s in 1986. At the request of the Saint Simeon’s Foundation, which facilitates support for the Home, Dr. Henneke donated more than 90 of the essays to the Foundation and they have been compiled and published in a new book titled, “Writing with a Quill Pen.”

Dr. Henneke notes, “Most of my writings—like a quill pen—are of the past. Like a quill pen it runs in fits and starts, sputters when stuck in the paper, and breaks off at the unlikeliest time. Like a quill pen they are treasured by a few to whom I am eternally grateful.”

Proceeds from the sale of “Writing with a Quill Pen”, as requested by Dr. Henneke, will be directed to the Home’s Employee Education Fund. This fund allows the Home to offer financial scholarships to employees who wish to further their training and education in nursing, as nurse and medication aides, life enrichment skills and other areas that benefit the residents.

Frank Eby, President of the Saint Simeon’s Foundation notes, “Dr. Henneke is a Tulsa treasure and we are so thankful that he is allowing us to share his essays with the public with the proceeds helping the Home povide advancement opportunities for the employees of Saint Simeon’s.”

Dana and Anne Smith, long-time admirers of Henneke’s essays and generous supporters of the Home, underwrote the cost of publishing this latest book by Dr. Henneke. As a result of their generosity, 100% of the book sales proceeds will benefit the Employee Education Fund.
